What exactly are “custom cabinets”?

If you do a little research, you’ll discover there are a few grades of cabinets, and we’d like to highlight each for you to shed a little light on what we do.

Economy (Also known as Stock, RTA or Modular Cabinetry)

Economy cabinets are what you’ll find at the typical home store such as Home Depot or Lowes. While these retailers offer a variety of designs, specs and quality standards options – from inexpensive to costly – selections are usually limited to what the store has in stock or on order.

When it comes to economy or modular type cabinetry, retail stores are unable to provide any size of cabinet that deviates from what they have in stock for each cabinet line. Sizes are usually limited to 16", 24", 32", etc. with a filler panel to make up the difference. There may be a number of styles and finishes to select from in the catalog, but choices in style, finish and hardware do not go beyond what is displayed, and you may only find a few fixed options for mixing and matching as cabinets are typically warehoused rather than made to order.

Custom Cabinets or Crossroads Custom Cabinetry

The exact opposite of economy or stock cabinets, custom cabinets are those made specifically to the customers specifications – this includes construction, style, finish, detailing and fixtures. Cabinets are made to order and are built to suit the individual customer’s wants and needs.

A custom cabinet maker will not place limitations on what is available and will freely “mix and match” based on your wants, meaning if you want cherry kitchen cabinets with physical distressing, you can get it; if you want oak kitchen cabinets with Blumotion soft close drawers, the feature is available for oak, and any other material you select.

Semi-Custom Cabinetry

As expected from the prefix “semi”, Semi-Custom cabinets fall somewhere in between economy and custom. A semi-custom cabinet maker may construct cabinets to order, based on the client’s preferences and sizes, but the maker may also have a specialty or specialties, meaning you can order whatever sizes you require, but the cabinet maker may only focus on certain types of wood, finishes or construction in his business.  Essentially, semi-custom means custom sizes - but not custom specifications.

It’s important to note that the home stores we mentioned, like Lowes and Home Depot, may have both economy and semi-custom selections available, and within each category, there will be different quality levels. Semi-custom, while more expensive because the cabinets must be made to order, does not necessarily mean better quality.

Crossroads Custom Cabinetry redefines the U.S. cabinet industry by making premium quality, custom cabinets widely available at greatly reduced prices. Crossroads' team of professionals are dedicated to empowering the home improvement consumer community with superior products at factory direct prices. Webinetry.com is a completely new channel ushering in a new era for the way today's American consumer can research, preview, budget, and finalize their cabinet purchasing decisions online.
