Today's Contemporary Cabinetry: It’s the colors, it’s the materials, it’s all of the above
With all of the wonderful attributes and affordable options available today in kitchen design, it's understandable if you are having trouble deciding which style of custom cabinets to choose. With the advent of contemporary cabinets and their clean, glossy, and exotic styles, just to name a few, the choices are greater than ever. Actually, you don't even have to settle for one style. Some of today's homeowners are pushing the envelope further, by combining styles. The selection of cabinet material, species and colors has grown as well, creating more range than ever.
New Designs in Cabinetry Invite Self Expression
"Some of our homeowners are asking us to combine multiple styles in one kitchen or even the entire home," says Michael Baugus, CEO of Crossroads Custom Cabinetry in Fullerton, CA. That might mean doing the kitchen perimeter in one finish, a contrasting finish on the island and sometimes a third finish on a feature piece in the room like an armoire. In fact, in modern interiors it has become quite common to combine contrasting materials to create linearity and visual interest in the design.
(Color to Material) Regional Trends in Kitchen Design
Trends vary across regions, home designs and individual homeowner preference, but designers have noticed a definite uptick in the requests for multi-color and multi-material kitchens. The enormous stock of housing that was built after World War II is now due for updating and having recently been dubbed "mid-century modern" lend themselves to these current trends.

"We recently completed a fabulous project here in Los Angeles where we used contemporary cabinetry in three different materials and multiple finishes ... and the homeowner absolutely loves it," said Char Avram of Avram Design.
Colors are growing everywhere, thanks to the use of modern materials and exotic engineered specialty veneers. These man-made exotic wood veneers are being combined in many different ways to create stunning interiors. Some examples include Wenge, Teak Cabinetry, Zebrano, Bamboo Kitchen Cabinets and rift cut Oak in various stains. These striking materials are also being used to create visual focal points in kitchens featuring solid colors.
Other trends feature multi-colored cabinets. Black is a popular choice in both glass kitchen cabinets and acrylic kitchen cabinets. Contrasting colors may include red, white and even green.

If these bold design trends appeal to you, your professional kitchen designer can help you make the right selections to achieve the individual look you are after.
