Rustic Custom Cabinetry - Where Old is New Again!

Something old, something new... Rustic cabinetry is ideal for cabins and homes with a rural or Western flavor. These stylish cabinets work well in traditional and country style homes since they effectively portray that "worn-in" and cozy appearance.  This old-fashioned appearance is achieved with distressing and finishing techniques that create an inviting look that radiates warmth and that "well worn" feeling.

There are few sources for Rustic Kitchen Cabinets. One option is to order custom cabinetry from a custom cabinet shop and have the distressing and finish features added to the wood species of your choice. Another option is have your rustic kitchen design created with rustic cabinets that are pre-designed with different types of distressing and finishes on a specific wood species. Understandably, pre-designed cabinetry is considerably easier to order and a lot less expensive.

Pre-designed rustic cabinetry will typically include finishing techniques such as distressing, painting and staining.  Popular cabinet distressing features include Wood Splits, Worm Holes, Nicks/Rock Indents, Speck Distressing, Hand Padding, Cowtailing, and Burnishing. Rustic kitchen cabinets  are created by adding painting and staining and in color choices such as painted green or barn red oak.

In addition to finishing techniques that achieve the rustic look, the wood species is also an important attribute in the selection process. Oak is an excellent wood choice as it has a dramatic grain pattern and it is a very hard and durable wood species. Because of these features, Oak is the most popular hardwood used in rustic cabinets. Maple is another great wood to work with when building rustic kitchen cabinets. Colors can range from off-white and red to brown depending if you're using sapwood or heartwood. Maple is a moderately strong wood with fine, tight closed grain. Other rustic wood choices include Cherry, Knotty Pine and Alder.

The key is tying all of these techniques, finishes and wood species together with a cabinet door style that matches your environment along and with the design you are trying to achieve.  With these goals in mind, you can create a design that seamlessly unites the past and present to create a timeless rustic kitchen.
